HOKO Breeding introduces a world first

The first hydrangea with glow-in-the-dark effect

HOKO Breeding introduces a world first in hydrangea breeding: a variety displaying a subtle, natural glow-in-the-dark effect.
The phenomenon was discovered during a routine selection round in the greenhouse and has since been confirmed by scientific research. The effect is entirely natural and results from a unique combination of pigments and cell structures.

A natural glow without additives

“We had the plants from this selection examined by experts and discovered that the cells in the flowers absorb light during the day and gradually release it at night,” says Wouter den Hollander, co-owner of HOKO Breeding. “A unique and entirely natural process, without any artificial additives.”

Scientifically confirmed
The discovery has now been studied by Wageningen University & Research (WUR). Their analysis shows that the effect is linked to a specific combination of pigments and cell structures. So far, it has only been observed in one cross within HOKO Breeding’s breeding selections. This cross shows clear genetic similarity to the well-known Magical Hydrangeaseries. The color-changing character of this line may play a role in the glowing process.

Illuminated Gardens Without Electricity

“This is a groundbreaking discovery,” says Matthieu Eveleens, co-owner of HOKO Breeding. “It brings a whole new dimension to ornamental plants and opens up exciting commercial opportunities for growers and retailers.”

This discovery offers both commercially and ecologically interesting opportunities for home gardeners as well as garden and landscape designers. Think of natural ambient lighting in gardens—and even a step towards bioluminescent ornamental plants.

“We’re still at the early stages of this research, but the idea of a garden that subtly lights up at night without electricity is incredibly exciting,” says Wouter den Hollander, co-owner of HOKO Breeding.

Strong Varieties with Character

HOKO Breeding is internationally known as a breeder of strong, compact hydrangea varieties.
Examples include the Magical Hydrangea series – known for its 150-day flowering period, the colorful and contemporary Surfing Safari series, and classics such as the bright white WUDU and the popular ANKONG.

All these varieties are characterized by their sturdy stems, allowing them to be grown without support stakes. This is a key selection criterion within HOKO Breeding’s breeding program.
